Steps to get a referral for an Autism assessment for your child in Delta

It is advisable to consult with a family physician or pediatrician if you have concerns about a child’s development, communication, behaviour, or social skills.

Sharing any observations noticed with the physician is recommended during the visit. These may include speech delays, sensory sensitivities, repetitive behaviours, difficulty with transitions, and challenges with interacting with others.

Based on these concerns, a family can request a referral for an Autism assessment through the public system, such as BCAAN, or through a private assessment clinic.

How to get Autism Diagnosis for children in Delta?

Option 1: Public Assessment Through BCAAN
The British Columbia Autism Assessment Network (BCAAN) provides autism assessments through the public system in B.C. Families usually start by speaking with a family doctor, pediatrician, or nurse practitioner for a referral. After the assessment, families can use the diagnosis to apply for BC Autism Funding.

Option 2: Private Assessment Through a Qualified B.C. Specialist
Families can also choose a private autism assessment with a qualified B.C. specialist. The specialist must follow B.C. standards and meet Autism Funding eligibility requirements. This process typically includes completing the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R).

Both options give families a recognized diagnosis that can help them access funding, services, and support for their child in British Columbia.
